HOW TO: Install 10.5.6 on the HP Mini

New postby toddlermn » Sun Jan 25, 2009 3:42 pm

Hey all...

I wanted to use the new iWork 09 on my Mini with OSX so i had to attempt to take it all the way to 10.5.6. Plus my battery indicator wasn't working with the old install so it was time to get it all going. Starting from scratch.

And success! Thanks to all who've posted here before. I was able to work my way thru the install with help from a few other threads and post-ers, although i didn't follow their procedures exactly.

I thought it might be helpful to post my steps. I apologize for the length, but i wanted to be thorough and easy to follow. Here's how I got it to work.

You'll need....

1) iDeneb 1.3 10.5.5 Install DVD with external DVD drive of course
You can install from a USB flash drive or USB HD. Setup instructions for that are elsewhere.
2) A USB Mouse is a must! The trackpad and keyboard on the mini don't work right away after the 10.5.6 update.
3) A usb keyboard (optional)
You can use the on screen keyboard in OS X if you don't have a real one. It's in the input menu section of the "international" icon under system preferences.
4) USB flash drive with patches, kexts files and utilities.

Part 1: Prep - Get the goods

Download all the files and instructions from this thread.
viewtopic.php?f=17&t=37#p85

Download OSX86 Tools
http://code.google.com/p/osx86tools/

Download Universal OSx86 Installer from here.
http://pcwizcomputer.com/downloads/UInstaller_1.2.zip

Download the DSDT Patcher from here.
http://forum.insanelymac.com/index.php? ... =133683%22

I downloaded and copied all these files and utilities to a USB flash drive so they were all handy, since the mini may not have an internet connection during parts of the install.

Part 2: Install 10.5.5

1) Boot the mini from the iDeneb 10.5.5 install DVD. F9 at startup will allow you to pick the external drive to boot from.

2) I used Disk Utility to wipe the internal SSD drive before installing. It's available from the utilities menu. The drive was formatted and partitioned as Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a Master Boot Record Partion table.

3) Install 10.5.5 selecting these options under the customize window.

Chipset: ichx fix
Patches: ACPI, CPU=1, Firewire Remove

4) After a successful install your mini should boot and be stuck in the "setup" loop (language, migration options, reboot, repeat). Follow the directions in the loop.txt instruction file to fix this. Command line stuff, but not hard. Type carefully.

5) Once you've successfully booted to the finder, you're ready to prep for 10.5.6

Part 3: Prep for 10.5.6

1) Create a new user Admin account under "Accounts" in the system preferences. It's real hard to type root and the password without a keyboard later on. Also under Login options set this new user to "automatic login".

3) Run the Universal OSx86 Installer. Select your hard drive. Choose "OSX86_Essentials" under the motherboard pulldown menu. Check "apply kext package". Also check the PC_EFI v9 Chameleon 1.0.12 option. Hit Install, and Reboot.

4) Run the DSDT Patcher, make sure you choose Darwin/Mac OS X, select the HPET option, choose your drive. Install and reboot.

5) Time to get a wireless internet connection. Follow the wifi.txt instructions and run the BCM43xx_enabler.sh script to enable airport and a wifi connection. Reboot, and connect to your wireless network.

As stated elsewhere, sometimes the wireless de-activates itself. To reactivate, reboot the computer and quickly hit the wifi switch on the the front of the Mini, before the HP logo and BIOs options appear.

Once you have a good internet connection continue to part 4.

Part 4: Install 10.5.6

1) Choose software update from the Apple menu. Software update will display a bunch of available updates. I de-selected all but the 10.5.6 update.

2) Let the update download and run. The Mini should restart itself once or twice and you should find yourself at the finder running 10.5.6! But your keyboard and trackpad won't work until fixed in the next part.

Part 5: Finish the install.

1) Run OSx86 Tools. Choose "Install Kexts". Choose all the kexts you downloaded in the first part. And follow the prompts to install. It was tricky to select all the .kext files without a keyboard. I used the onscreen keyboard and was able to shift-click them all at once. It will also ask for your account password. Make sure the on screen keyboard is visible to enter it.

2) When the Kext Install is finshed. Don't hit restart, hit cancel.

3) Still in OSx86 Tools, select "Repair Permissions" and hit Run Selected Tasks.

4) After it's complete. Reboot immediately.

5) The final step is to re-setup the wireless connection following the wifi.txt instructions and using the BCM43xx_enabler.sh. Reboot, and reconnect your wireless network.

Part 6: Done!

At this point you're done! You've updated to 10.5.6. And installed the patches to get the trackpad and keyboard working again, sllep and correct video rez, battery indicator and wireless working. There's a couple more things i did than.

Run software update again to download and install those other updates you skipped earlier.

Note: I ended up installing iDeneb from an external HD. THe cheap dvd drive i bought on ebay was giving me trouble. I'm sure this procedure would work from the DVD tho.

I also installed the USB webcam driver from here.
http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/

My mini is now running solid 10.5.6, and i successfully installed iwork 09!
As mentioned elsewhere many times...only audio and ethernet are not working. soon hopefully!

Good luck and happy mini computing!

It takes my mini about 1:15 to boot up to the finder.
I've got 1GB of RAM and the 16GB SSD inside.

Thanks for the instructions. I am having a problem, I assume I am doing something wrong with the DSDT patcher. After installing 10.5.6 the mini hangs at startup where the ACPI load would normally occur. Any ideas?

I had the same issue with this install method. After I did the 10.5.6 update it restarted bug hung on the apple boot screen. I would prefer to use this method as it is able to receive official apple updates.

Thanks for the great user guide!

I'll kick off the iso search later today, but I have one question first. Will this guide give you an option to install to a drive other than C:\? I have Windows 7 there and want to keep it, but would like to try running OS X from a 16GB SD card. Will I be given any kind of boot manager to help me select which OS to boot in to?

Thanks!
