Enabling sound in UNR 9.04

New postby scotthva5 » Wed Mar 25, 2009 5:44 pm

For those of you interested in running the nightly builds of the upcoming 9.04 (jaunty jackalope) version of UNR there is an excellent thread on launchpad which covers the steps necessary to get sound running on the Mini.

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+question/64930

Hopefully this will be fixed by the time jaunty arrives in April as the method listed (download, tar, configure and make) is not for the faint of heart nor the Linux noobie.

After fiddling around with 9.04-alpha-6 (the current nightly builds) for the past couple of weeks I can honestly say that it's a real show stopper. Even with all the debug code still in place it runs very quickly on the Mini and (for an alpha release) is quite stable.

the latest version of alsa (linux sound driver ... or something like that) fixes the issue all you have to do is add this ppa to your sources.list
Code: Select all
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/themuso/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
update and upgrade to the latest packages

Not quite. In order to get the speakers working on a Mini both alsa-driver and alsa-lib 1.0.19 need to be installed. That ppa uses 1.0.18, which unfortunately does not enable the main speakers (headphone jack works just fine thou...go figure).

I can't get any sound with jaunty 9.04 with a HP mini 1120NR. I tried alsa 1.0.19 but it doesn't fix the problem.

I found an easy way to fix it for the 1120NR.
I posted an how-to on my blog.

Just installed UNR 9.04 over my previous Mint install (yeah, I get distracted by shiny, new things) and this worked like a champ for me:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... omments/63

Also found a great tip from a user calling himself "ski". Run these commands to prevent future updates from undoing all your hard work:

echo alsa-base hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections
echo alsa-oss hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections
echo alsa-utils hold | sudo dpkg --set-selections

Got all audio devices working now, including the internal mic (Edit: spoke too soon - mic no longer works for some reason). Can't figure out for the life of me why they would allow a little annoyance like to this slip out with a final release, especially when they're aware of it beforehand, but there you have it. Doesn't seem to be any good reason not to include this since it doesn't appear to break anything else that I'm aware of.

Now...quite awhile after Jaunty's release...do we have an easier fix yet? I know my way around the command line but that doesn't mean I like it and unpacking a bunch of stuff and messing around sounds unappealing.

*sob* ;-; I just want sound!

Not that I'm aware of, but I quit following the thread in that bug report a while ago. I'm now running Crunchbang which is currently based on Intrepid and may just skip it's 9.04 release and go straight to 9.10 when it appears later this year as 9.04 has not proven to be quite as stable and doesn't really contain enough new features to compel me to upgrade. I would expect that an updated version of ALSA that will "just work" with the Mini will be included with the 9.10 release, and so I wait.
