Voided waranty so.....Touchscreen time!

New postby Mako » Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:28 am

I'm looking at the touch screens, and installing one on my hp mini. (not like I'm missing the support anyways)

I'm currently looking at the 8.9" ones and nabbing one this friday to install, also going to look at installing a wifi antenna, and will finish up the dark lens guide since I am going to buy a camera.

I think I need to just treat it like it is.. a cheap, fun, notebook to use everywhere and void that warranty with fun easy to do mods. I was hoping HP didn't make such a netbook, but oh well. I'll be reporting in at least this friday with the lens removal guide in higher quality. So keep an eye on this thread.
I void warranties. 1010NR 8.9" touchscreen mod and custom paint job.
Next projects: WiFi Antennas, CF harddrive, and replacing the mic and webcam.

HP Mini 1000 Touchscreen Guide

touchscreen1.JPG

Okay first off do this mod at your own risk,
second there seem to be only two locations available I can find for sure in this case.. The locations are where the usb port for the hp mobile drive is or where the wwan minipci card goes..Anywhere else I didn't consider due to size.

Here are the guides to pulling this badboy apart:
http://jkkmobile.blogspot.com/2008/12/h ... ected.html This is okay, but I liked the manual better myself plus doesn't contain anything on remove the bezel far as I know.

viewtopic.php?f=7&t=28 I like this best, showed me everything on anything for this notebook.

I am doing this install for the guide in where the HP mobile drive was, I might do a minipci version when I get a new screen.

Okay, after you have it pulled apart remove the hard drive to the caddy, you won't need the caddy anymore. After the bezel is off CLEAN your screen, anything on it or the touchscreen on the inside will be stuck in there if you aren't careful.

Okay, first off remove the HP mobile drive. Next, cut the cable for the usb port and solder the wires into the controller itself.

Just drop the controller anywhere really, but also note that I don't think you'll be able to use a runcore drive with the controller located here (according to what I know, feel free to correct me on this issue)

Just run below the henge like the guide says for all wiring going to the bezel and I'd suggest taping or hot gluing them in place.

After that prepare to place the touchscreen on the lcd, if you notice any finger prints or dust now would be the time to clean them as once the screen is on its not coming out unless you pull it off and clean it.

I'll include an bonus tip:
Don't like how bright the LEDs are? I used a sharpie to block out some of the light and dull them down while you are already in the area.

Sorry the guide isn't so hot, but should be able to show its doable.. I know for a fact the touchscreen will fit in the bezel as I ran the controller outside of the notebook plugged into one of my usb ports. The very top image is with the screen control ribbon sticking out of the top of the screen.

I'm currently looking at which kit to order that will be the easiest to adapt to the mini.

I'm thinking of using the minidrive slot to control the usb connection, see about getting kit with a splitter so I'll have a plug I can use powered usb devices in (like my 1tb usb drive)

I'm unsure of the size of the screen, and think I might have to cut on the bezel a little if not use heat and mold it a little.

I use the 8.9" screen on mine, but also this wont be a plug and play project but oh well this one will require me to fire up the soldering iron.

but my plans are to move that POS mobile drive port out to be usable or eliminate it and place a antenna port there and install bluetooth.

Isn't there a flush "glass" cover on the screen on the 9" version that would prohibit using a touchscreen?

The question if there is that glass cover is whether or not you can replace that with the touchpad and retain its aesthetic appeal (doubtit), but nonetheless, check out my link again, I know it's the 10" model but the seller sells 8.9" for the Eeepc, so it may work.

The problem I've noticed with this d**m HP netbook is it's too pretty for people to do too much to it and its made by HP and not a Taiwanese company like Asus. The Asus has been around longer and allows for more flexibility when it comes to modding (thus the touchscreen mods geared towards their eeepcs)

I bought one from a different seller, they had what I was looking for exactly, going to run off the usb hub for the flash drive, and split it to provide a new usb port.. I thought about internal bluetooth but would really like just one more usb port, going to install the antenna for wireless elsewhere.

I would think that the 10 inch model would be difficult to install a touch screen on, however with the large bezel on the 8.9 inch one there should be lots of room to mess around with. I remember seeing one guy that added tons of stuff to his EEE 701, which has the biggest bezel known to mankind, most of which installed in the bezel.

LOL :D
I too doubt it will be possible to install touchscreen to the 10" version and keep it aesthetic. Also the usability of touchscreen on the mini with limited angle of opening the lid is not very clear to me.

that is true, I kind of question a touch screen on any laptop that cannot covert to a tablet, but hey I guess we wouldn't get anywhere without people doing stuff like this, right?
