Again, guys --- there is no problem with the webcam. The only problem is the dark film TINT that is covering the lens.

Until this is removed, the "dark" image will persist.

I agree though, this is absolutely unacceptable and will surely hurt sales once this gets out.

How long will it be before an official response? Will we even get one?

" an issue like this “Webcam too dark to use in indoor” is not an issue, it is by design. The webcam needs significant background lighting.
Also be aware the webcam is a 0.3 megapixel cam, it is not very high resolution and images will appear “grainy”. This is normal.".

It isn't a big deal to me but it would be nice if it worked better for those rare video calls.

I really hope this isn't going to be HP's party line on the issue. There is no way that a completely unusable webcam is "by design".

its an easy fix, I just hope they will offer a better lens, a clear one like on the pre-production model would have been awesome one that sits on the outside in the hole.. like I bet it was originally designed that way but they changed it.

Ok, I just removed the tinted film. Mine appeared to be glued to the camera side, but each time I pulled the bezel back it would unstick from the adhesive and snap back to the bezel side. As a previous person said, be careful because it's easy to scratch the back of black bezel, which is noticeable from the front. I put a very small small scratch in mine. Otherwise I can say that, as promised, the image quality looks much better. I'm worried that it could be too bright in outdoor light, but frankly I don't plan to use this outside. I can't test that now as it's just about bed time.

Interestingly, without the tinted film, you can now see the little plastic camera in there (at least that's what I think I'm looking at). The tinted film is actually a bit of a mirror which normally hides the camera behind it, so without it there you can see straight through to the camera which looks like a little 8-pointed star-shaped cheap piece of plastic. I wouldn't be surprised if the film is there purely to hide the little camera. I personally would rather have a working camera over a hidden camera :)

I used a kitchen knife after being unsuccessful with a utility knife. I'm sure someone can find an easier way. Getting underneath the film without damaging the bezel wasn't very easy. By the way, I did NOT find a way to pull back the bezel any further. I pried it open just enough to see in there and move around with the knife.

One more thing: before getting too serious with the knife, I did try inserting some tape to try to stick to it and pull it out with. Didn't work. It may be adhered on both sides. Not exactly sure. For me this was a one-way thing. The film is fairly damaged and I won't be able to re-insert it.

Good luck.
Aaron

PS: Below is my sample without the film. It's part of my kitchen, at night with fairly dim indoor lighting. Before removing the film you wouldn't see much at all.

finally got my film off, got a few specs of dust under the bezel in the process but I imagine a good compressed air blow will sort that out, keep that in mind while holding it open though, definitely improved brightness a lot, shame they used such a low res part for the webcam

If I had to make a guess I'd say the tinted film was actually some type of polarization filter for the webcam that wasn't afixing itself properly, which might explain why popping the bezel seemed to temporarily fix things in some cases, oh well, better off gone!

No clue, I just got tired of waiting for an hp fix lol... I have had hell with their tech support and bios updates.. Like their bios update randomly set a password on my bios..luckly reflashing fixed that issue...I also have a lovely email from HP TELLING me to take the cmos battery out to fix that issue... lol

I am not too pleased with hp on the support side, I love the mini overall minus that plastic lens.

I also removed the plastic lens...

it is sooo much better, but unfortunately I did scratch the the bezel a bit, nothing serious, but still slightly annoying that I even had to resort to taking the thing apart myself

i'm worried that now that the bezel has been opened I might face problems with dust inside the screen, is that possible?

Do I understand it right that you remove the protective piece of plastic in front of the camera, which leaves a circular hole for the dust to enter the casing?

So after my 4th bout with HP tech support, they still don't recognize this as a frequent issue (or at least their CSRs on the other side of the world don't know about it) but they are having me send back the computer for repair or replacement. I'm bummed to be without it for a week or two, but I'll let you all know how it turns out. I thought I'd try this before messing with the warranty by pulling the tinted section off myself.

All, I found this solution on another webpage, and it worked GREAT for me. I was wary of prying open my netbook. I did not have to that (did not remove the film):

The webcam seems to be equivalent to the Microsoft VGA basic cam that requires no drivers... the intended drivers are in Windows.

The darkness is a problem when the camera settings drop to default values which has a low brightness setting.

Microsoft seem to intend the cam to be used with Windows Live Messenger... install it then use Tools > Audio and video setup... after the audio comes the webcam settings page. Default Brightness is 0 (middle of the slider) Shove it to right hand end and brightness should make anyone happy at night.

We can't blame HP. It's a Microsoft foopah.

The problem really seemstto be that there is no included software to manage the brightness setting.

Exactly what I am thinking.
