QUESTION: OS X on the 2140?

New postby hasteveha » Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:25 pm

I really want to run osx on a netbook, so far the wind and mini 9 seem to run it the best. I want to get a 2140,but will it be compatible? I don't mind waiting for for hi res 2140. But if the 2140 doesn't or won't run osx well, I might go with the others.

Well it should run to some extent since it is an Atom based netbook, however I don't know what wifi or lan or audio chips it has so it's hard to say if that stuff will work.

If they could get everything compatible I'd buy it in a heartbeat

My HP Mini 2140 has finally arrived, in my first attempts of installing OSX86 I came across several problems. I used the install method used for the HP Mini 1000 with iDeneb, first the screen resolution made it impossible to see what I was doing, then the keyboard and mouse wouldn't function and as a result I had to plug it into a monitor mouse and keyboard. After the installation process completed, mac os x booted up without a problem tho nothing worked, I went ahead an installed the kext provided by the wonderful folks who cracked the HP Mini 1000 osx86 project, this let to a kernal panic and much more fustration. I'd like to get the ball rolling by asking if anyone else is onboard at making osx86 run on the hp mini 2140.

Yes, I'd like to take a crack at it.

It's surprising and a real bummer that the keboard and screen aren't working.

Do you have both wired and wireless networking operational? These seem like commodity systems.

How about audio, which wasn't working on the HP 1000?

How about Bluetooth? "HP Integrated Bluetooth" sounds suspiciously proprietary. Same for the trackpad.

What happens if you try putting it to sleep?

Can you fill in any more of the other specific hardware specs for the 2140? Running ioreg from the Terminal can show what hardware the MacOS has recognized. (Do "man ioreg" for specific command switches.)

Here's what I have so far summarizing hardware for the 2140. I'm sorry I don't have comparable data for the HP 1000 - can anyone provide a comparison?

I have successfully installed OS X Leopard 10.5.6 on 2140.

I installed it as a multi-boot system together with WinXP. The installation ran pretty smoothly, without any major problems. Most of the things work ok, including the iPhone SDK (xcode).

However, I'm still struggling with the following:
1. Audio doesn't work very well. I used a patch from InsanelyMac to get it sort-of working. It works fine inside the OS and Safari, but I think other things don't work with it (eg. Skype crashes after sound is played).
2. Keyboard and Mouse (Synaptics TrackPad/TouchPad) don't work at all. I tried various things on the web to get it working, but haven't succeeded yet.
3. Most important problem - CPU fan is not working. As soon as OSX starts up, you can hear the fan spin down and it doesn't turn back on. The result is that the system heats up significantly. I also tried various things there, but no successes yet either.

If anyone else has been able to fix those things, do let me know please.

What audio chipset does the 2140 have? Is it the same as the mini 1000? Do you have a link to the kext you used? I'd rather have half working sound then no sound on my 1035NR.

It has: ADI1984HD - Intel 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller

I used the package from: http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?act=attach&type=post&id=13834

Is the CPU fan working in your mini? What about keyboard and mouse?

Wow, great work! Can you give a brief summary of your installation procedure?

Re: Audio - since some of your audio sources are working - but not others that are presumably using a different API - It would be interesting to see if Rogue Amoeba's SoundSource would help; it's designed to redirect system and application audio streams to/from various physical interfaces. It's available here:

I'm trying to sort out the remaining issues before I write the detailed instructions. But the basic instruction is that I used "XxX Leo 10.5.6" to install it and then applied the patches I mentioned above to get the video, audio and the few other things working properly.
