RIP HP 2140...no longer available for purchase

Postby itesseract » Fri Jun 19, 2009 7:12 am

The 2140 is no longer available for purchase on the HP website. I think I got one of the last ones through CDW, but it's backordered anyway (even though it said 1-3 days when I ordered it) until about the first week of July. When I talked to an HP rep a few days ago, he had told me that they were going to be removing the 2140 from the website soon. Apparently there will be a comparable updated model coming out soon, but he had no idea when it would be available. I hope I made the right choice--I think the only things that would make me sad to have ordered this version would be if the new one is significantly lighter, or if they figure out a way to integrate the 6 cell battery without the funny shape.

I'm up there right now! Please be advised the old URL did a re-direct to this: http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm ... 72994.html

Just out of curiosity I called their 800 number and was able to confirm the HOOHA that has been posted .... Sorry but I couldn't believe my eyes!!

Seems they think that the "new plastic" 1101 models and some others will fill our needs....? I got kinda sorta irate with the girl who answered the phone and mumbled something about HP doing their traditional dance step, called stepping on themselves with golf shoes.... Geez, I started with the 2133, then 2140 SD, then 2140 HD and really liked them pretty much........

I asked what about the 2150 in the "new toys" that they are bringing out and no not yet was the response....Just the plastic crap in the 11xx series.

In case it doesn't show I'm aggravated! I was assured that all of the support promises and such will still be there for us tho..... if that helps?

I'd hazard a guess that the person I talked to today may have been displaying the HP well-known Lack of Product Knowledge when she spoke about the 2150....

I read this and many other rumors/announcements about a late June arrival:

wow, i just saw this news too... that's nuts. the 2140 HD just came out in march! (sd is a few months older).

it would be a shame if they stopped making these metal-cased netbooks... they are so much nicer (for not that much more cash).

if they bring on a follow on version, let's hope HP retains the HD 1366x768 screen, but non-glossy... and keep the nice metal casing. fully integrating the 6-cell battery would be a boon... along with a 3rd usb port...

i'd replace this 2140HD in a heartbeat if they could do all of the above! ;)

Can't get your 2140??
Thanks to the chatter over on 2133 Guides site HP has a Refurbished Business Products listing @

http://h71016.www7.hp.com/html/hpremark ... price-list

I'd scanned the list and mentioned that all I could see was HP2140 SD in the listings. Well today I read where one gent called the number listed in the page and asked about 2140HD and you need to read the deal he got for $440.00 tax & shipping!

Need one? Certainly worth a read.....

HTH

I searched for the last 2 weeks for a 2140HD, and finally came across the refurb store yesterday. Got myself a BRAND NEW not refurbed 2140HD from the refurb center with a 3 year extended warranty for $470 including shipping/tax. It is priced at $375+tax/shipping. Ground shipping is $19, or till the end of June they are offering a three year warranty extension for $50 and cut the shipping rate to $10 if you opt to take the warranty extension.

Here's why it's brand new according to the refurb center rep: some company placed an order for 500 custom built 2140HD's and ended up returning about 40 of them unopened. HP's policy is that if a custom build is returned, even unopened, it goes straight to the refurb store since it is non-standard.

More info here:
http://www.hp.com/sbso/buspurchase_refurbished_faq.html

Anyway, as of yesterday at 4pm when I completed my order they had 18 HD units left, all with 1G RAM, 160G 5400 rpm HDD, 3-cell battery, and XP Pro installed with Vista upgrade DVD included. They also have about 200 of the SD models left. Some of them are also unopened custom build returns. Their phone number is 1-888-385-5408, dont remember their hours.

Update on the 2150... An associate that does marketing for HP confirmed that there will be no 2150 model. The 2150 was to be a short run product built on the same platform as the 2140 but to include 3G connectivity. However, HP built the 2140 in mass and warehoused them, expecting that their stockpile would last until November or December and that a replacement model would be released in time for Christmas. Somewhere along the way there was a miscalculation and they sold out 3x faster than expected. All of the remaining chassis that were to be used for the limited production 2150 were used to fill the final orders for the 2140. With lacking resources available for the 2150 builds, the project was scrapped and they've moved forward on the next-gen model (the 5101), which will have 3G connectivity as an available option.

Thanks jalaabs, for the added information. It's always easier to take if one understands the reasoning for a supposed disturbing decision.

Take Care
