How I fixed my webcam issue

Postby Mako » Sun Jan 04, 2009 10:22 am

I was noticing that on my HP mini there was a little plastic lens protector, I gently scraped the plastic protector off of the bezel for the lcd screen from the inside. It took some gentle prying it apart and then used knife to scrape and found this piece was TINTED, after removing this piece my web cam issue is no longer a problem.

It still is a little dark but it no longer requires me to point a light directly at me and the camera to break through the tint on the lens cover.

These piece is just on there with a slight adhesive, I think it could be placed back on without an issue also....This is my solution to the webcam issue since HP has failed to step forward with anything... I blame it on HP who didn't pay attention to the final product.

I don't know if this was the right section for this also here is a picture of the part I'm talking about.

The lighting was done with only the light coming out of the window through my blinds which normally was even visible to me on my webcam.

Yeah real thin, attached with an adhesive, have to be careful or you'll scrape the tint some.

You could reapply a piece of plastic on the outside top protect the lens and it not be affected as much as being on the inside as no light could get through it which is why the web cam is dark for everyone I believe.

You knew it was coming --- do you have any pics of the your webcam in action now?

Just curious before I go and pry into the LCD. BTW, how did you pry it open?

That picture of the lens is from my web cam in use, you just take your thumbnail alone the edge and try to gently split it apart, let me see if the manual shows an easier way.

Wow, that picture is SO much better in quality than anything I've ever seen out of my HP Mini 1000's webcam. Looking at the picture, I'd guess that the tinting is blocking out about 50 - 75% of the light.

How hard/risky was it to pry apart the case and remove that piece of plastic?

No way --- that cannot be the HP Mini's "webcam". Notice how I put the webcam in parenthesis, because I don't really consider it a webcam at all. =)

I'm excited at this new prospect of fixing the webcam...

I basicly just dragged my thumbnail along the crack in the bezel tell it popped open, poked the knife gently onto the lens and it popped off, I just used the knife to pull it out as it had adhesive all over it. You might hear a slight pop, but thats just popping the piece that holds it together lose.

I think you could use a less tinted piece of plastic there, but I'm going without one myself.

Can you please repost pics of the process in removing this? Specifically, how to separate the screen, and which piece of plastic to remove?

Thank you so much!

I just dragged my thumbnail along the area where the cover and the screen bezel meet, was the only crack on top of the webcam.
Once it was open to where I could see the webcam I took a knife and poked the plastic lens tell it came off the inside of the bezel from where the hole for the webcam. After that I just removed it from inside the notebook and snapped the area on top of the webcam back together.

I'm sorry the only camera I have is the one on the mini, which is why I got it.
